History

In 1895 , brothers Jozef and Adolf De Coene founded the “Kortrijkse Kunstwerkstede Gebroeders De Coene” company. They were pioneers in the field of wood processing, and quickly built up a truly diverse range of products through their focus and innovation. 

The first sheet of plywood was produced in 1921. Wood specialist De Coene continued to evolve. From Art Nouveau furniture to train coach seating, veneer and heavy rafters for buildings, nothing is beyond De Coene.

Following the fire at department store Innovation in 1967 , strict laws were introduced in Belgium concerning fire compartments. De Coene responded right away and designed the first wooden fire-retardant door in Belgium. Since then, the sales of FD doors have risen and risen.

A takeover by new investors in 1977 created De Coene Products NV. The core business operations were:

1. door manufacturing
2. veneered panels
3. furniture

The furniture production later moved to a department in Wallonia. Veneered panel production subsequently ceased in 2016.

Today, our single core business focus is the development, sale and distribution of engineered wood internal doors. 
 
As such, we are constantly seeking to add technical value . The primary technical properties are enhanced resistance to fire, sound and burglary. Responding to the trend towards sustainable construction, since 2014 we have also been supplying doors that feature energy-saving properties. 
 
In addition, we are strongly committed to R&D and innovation. This is illustrated in the PURE stile finishing, shock-resistant polyurethane door edging that can be used on fire-resistant doors. This product isunique to us in Belgium.
 
With a long-term vision and a view to expanding door production in mind, recent years have seen a number of significant investments to ensure that we remain the authority on engineered wood internal doors in the future.
